We’ve been supporting the Burundi Akawa Project in collaboration with Condesa Co.Lab since 2017 and the quality of the coffee produced gets better every year. The project aims to improve the lives and help create a more sustainable future for coffee farmers in Burundi with the use of plant nurseries, water recycling, training, guidance, and stability of income through pre-purchasing.
Seedlings are grown in plant nurseries and given to farmers, along with new farming equipment, for free to revitalise their crops and increase yields. Six new washing stations have been built with a focus on improving the quality of coffee processing and installing water filtration to enable water recycling for watering crops and livestock. Farmers receive guidance and training throughout this whole process. So far, they have managed to increase their incomes 3 to 4 times their previous levels giving them stability and a way out of poverty.
